TL;DR: Military families arriving in San Antonio after a PCS need to update auto insurance immediately, secure the right home or renters coverage for their specific neighborhood, and take advantage of military-friendly discounts — all before unpacking the last box.
Texas requires minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25 — that's $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. If you're driving into San Antonio with an out-of-state policy, you'll want to switch over or confirm your coverage meets Texas requirements right away.
Texas is an at-fault state, which means the driver who caused the accident pays for damages. That's different from some states where no-fault rules apply. If your last duty station was in Michigan, Florida, or another no-fault state, the way claims work here will feel different.
One thing that catches a lot of military families off guard: San Antonio has a significant number of uninsured drivers on the road. Adding uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to your policy is a smart move, even though it's not legally required. A licensed agent can walk you through what makes sense for your situation.
Joint Base San Antonio covers Lackland AFB, Fort Sam Houston, and Randolph AFB — so military families end up spread across very different parts of the city. If you're settling on the Northwest Side near Lackland, your neighborhood matters more than you might think when it comes to insurance.
Alamo Ranch and Helotes — Popular with military families who want newer construction and good schools through Northside ISD. New construction homes sometimes qualify for certain discounts, but they still face the same hail and wind exposure as every other home in the area.
Leon Valley — A solid option for first-time homebuyers and families looking for more affordable housing. It's a self-contained city within San Antonio with a diverse, established community feel.
Stone Oak — Families stationed at Fort Sam Houston or Randolph often land here for the excellent NEISD schools. Homes here range widely in size and value, so coverage needs vary quite a bit.
The Dominion and Shavano Park — Higher-value homes with custom features that need to be properly documented in a home insurance policy. Standard coverage limits might not be enough for custom kitchens, pools, or extensive landscaping.
Each of these neighborhoods sits in a slightly different risk zone for hail, wind, and flash flooding. A policy that made sense in Colorado Springs or Norfolk probably won't translate directly to what you need here.
Many PCS families rent for the first year while they learn the city. If that's you, don't skip renters insurance. It covers your personal belongings — furniture, electronics, uniforms, everything inside the unit — if something goes wrong.
A standard renters policy also includes personal liability coverage, which protects you if someone gets hurt in your apartment or rental home. For a relatively small annual cost, it fills a gap that a lot of families don't realize exists until they need it.
If you're renting in a flood-prone area — and parts of San Antonio absolutely qualify, since the city sits in what's known as Flash Flood Alley — a standard renters policy won't cover flood damage. That requires a separate flood policy, and there's a 30-day waiting period before it kicks in. Worth getting set up early.
Spring 2026 storm season will be here before you know it. San Antonio deals with serious hail — a single 2016 storm caused billions in damage across the region. Roofs, vehicles, gutters, siding — all vulnerable.
Texas homeowners policies commonly have a separate percentage-based wind/hail deductible, which works differently from the flat-dollar deductible you might be used to. On a $300,000 home with a 2% wind/hail deductible, you'd be responsible for the first $6,000 of a hail claim. That number surprises a lot of newcomers.
If you're buying a home, review that deductible carefully before you close. If you're renting, make sure your auto policy includes comprehensive coverage so your car is protected when a spring storm rolls through.
Many insurance carriers offer military discounts, and bundling your auto and home or renters coverage with the same carrier often adds another layer of savings. Ask about both when you're setting up your policies.
Timing matters, too. Don't wait until you've been in San Antonio for a few weeks to start the insurance conversation. Ideally, you'll have your Texas auto insurance and home or renters policy lined up before or right as you arrive. That way you're covered from day one — not scrambling after a fender bender on Loop 1604 during rush hour.
